The elementary health curriculum is a sequential and age appropriate program designed to promote an understanding and an awareness of sound health and safety practices. The study of health focuses on the individual, the family and the community. Major themes include health habits and hygiene, safety, nutrition, drug and alcohol prevention and growth and development.
At the primary level, instruction involves formal class lessons, as well as, informal responses to incidents or integrated curriculum references referred to as “teachable moments.” In addition to classroom instruction, the school nurse and occasionally guest speakers from the community also present health lessons. The staff at each elementary school implements the alcohol, drug and tobacco lessons during a coordinated week, often during the national “Red Ribbon” drug prevention week. The high school SADD peer leaders and the DARE officer participate in presenting these lessons when available. At grades 4 and 5, classroom instruction in health education is supplemented by lessons taught by the school nurse on growth and development, viruses, the immune system and an introduction to HIV/AIDS in grade 5. In grade 5, the DARE officer also presents pre-DARE lessons.
